Today I have something special for you — a drama so intense, so brilliantly crafted, that it became a worldwide phenomenon almost overnight. And as a Japanese learner, it’s an absolute goldmine of fascinating vocabulary and expressions you won’t find in any textbook.

今日は特別な作品を紹介します。あまりにも衝撃的で、あまりにも巧みに作られていて、一夜にして世界的な話題作となったドラマです。そして日本語学習者にとっては、教科書には絶対に載っていない魅力的な語彙や表現の宝庫です。
The drama is called 『地面師たち』(Jimenshi-tachi) — known internationally as “Tokyo Swindlers.”
What Is This Drama About? — どんなドラマ？
Before we dive into the language, let me take you into the story. Trust me — once you understand what’s happening, you won’t be able to stop watching.
まず言葉を学ぶ前に、ストーリーの世界に入っていきましょう。信じてください。何が起きているのかわかったら、もう見るのをやめられなくなります。
What Is a “Jimenshi”? — 「地面師」とは？
Let’s start with the title itself, because the word 「地面師」(jimenshi) is something most Japanese people have never heard before either.
まず、タイトルそのものから始めましょう。「地面師（じめんし）」という言葉は、実はほとんどの日本人も聞いたことがない言葉です。
- 地面 (jimen) = ground, land (土地)
- 師 (shi) = master, expert (専門家)
A jimenshi is a type of con artist (詐欺師 / sagishi) who specializes in real estate fraud. They pretend to be the owner of a valuable piece of land, create fake documents and fake identities, and then “sell” the land to a buyer — pocketing the money and disappearing before anyone realizes what happened.
地面師とは、不動産詐欺を専門とする詐欺師のことです。高額な土地の所有者になりすまし、偽造した書類や身分証明書を使って土地を「売却」し、誰も気づかないうちに大金を持って消えてしまうのです。
And here’s the shocking part: this drama is based on real events. In 2017, a group of jimenshi actually swindled a major Japanese corporation out of approximately 5.5 billion yen (about $50 million USD) in one of the most audacious fraud cases in Japanese history.
そして驚くべきことに、このドラマは実際の事件をモデルにしています。 2017年、地面師グループが実際に大手日本企業から約55億円をだまし取るという、日本史上最も大胆な詐欺事件のひとつが発生しました。
The Story — あらすじ
Imagine this: In the heart of Tokyo, there is a prime piece of land worth billions of yen. The elderly owner has been living quietly, refusing every offer to sell. Developers have been circling for years, desperate to get their hands on it.
こんな場面を想像してみてください。東京の一等地に、数十億円の価値がある土地がある。高齢の地主はひっそりと暮らし、あらゆる売却話を断ってきた。デベロッパーたちは何年も前からその土地を手に入れようと必死になっている。
Now, enter the jimenshi.
そこに、地面師が登場します。
Harrison Yamanaka (ハリソン山中), played by Toyokawa Etsushi (豊川悦司), is the mastermind — a man of terrifying intelligence and zero empathy. He doesn’t raise his voice. He doesn’t need to. Every word he speaks carries the weight of absolute authority.
豊川悦司が演じるハリソン山中は、首謀者です。恐ろしいほどの知性と、ゼロの共感力を持つ男。声を荒げない。荒げる必要がない。彼が発する一言一言が、絶対的な権威の重みを持っている。
Tsujimoto Takumi (辻本拓海), played by Ayano Go (綾野剛), is the negotiator — the man who sits across the table from billion-dollar corporations and lies with a perfectly straight face. He’s calm, charming, and dangerously convincing.

Their target? A massive piece of land in central Tokyo. Their goal? 100 billion yen (100億円). And they intend to steal every last yen of it.

Now that you understand the world of the jimenshi, let’s look at the most powerful lines from the drama. Each one is a window into how Japanese language can be used as a weapon.
地面師の世界がわかったところで、ドラマの中で最もインパクトのあるセリフを見ていきましょう。それぞれが、日本語がどのように「武器」として使われるかを見せてくれる窓です。
1.「ターゲットは大きければ大きいほど狙いやすい」“The bigger the target, the easier it is to aim for.”
– 練習すればするほど上手になる。(The more you practice, the better you get.)
言語ポイント： 「〜ば〜ほど」は「〜すればするほど〜」という意味の文法パターンです。日本語のあらゆる場面で出てくる、とても便利な表現です。
2.「およそ物の価値なんてものはその時々で変わるものです」“The value of things changes with the times.”
言語ポイント： 「なんてものは」に注目してください。これは軽視する表現です。「価値なんてもの」は「価値のようなもの」——人々が思うほど大したものではない、というニュアンスを含んでいます。
3.「人類の歴史は早い話、土地の奪い合いの歴史です」“Human history is, simply put, a history of fighting over land.”
言語ポイント： 「早い話」は「簡単に言えば」「要するに」という意味の便利な会話表現です。

言語ポイント： 「常（つね）」は「いつも」「当たり前」という意味です。「〜のが常です」は「〜するのが普通です」というフォーマルな言い方です。

In “Tokyo Swindlers,” you’ll see how keigo (敬語 / polite language) can be used as a weapon.
このドラマでは、敬語がいかに「武器」として使われるかを見ることができます。
Harrison doesn’t use keigo to show respect; he uses it to control people and project power. When polite grammar is paired with cold, heartless content, it becomes far more terrifying than a shout.
敬語は敬意を示すだけでなく、相手をコントロールし、威圧するための「武器」にもなります。ハリソンのように、冷徹な内容を最も丁寧な文法で語ることで、叫ぶよりもずっと恐ろしい響きが生まれるのです。
