The anime is called 『薬屋のひとりごと』(Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) — known internationally as “The Apothecary Diaries.”

The Story — あらすじ
Picture a vast, glittering imperial palace — inspired by ancient China but existing in its own fictional world. Behind its beautiful walls, hundreds of women live in the rear palace (後宮 / kōkyū) — the emperor’s inner court, where his consorts and their servants reside.
巨大で華やかな宮殿を思い浮かべてください。古代中国に着想を得た、独自の架空の世界です。美しい壁の向こうには、何百人もの女性たちが後宮（こうきゅう）——皇帝の内廷で、妃やその侍女たちが暮らす場所——で生活しています。
Among them is Maomao (猫猫 / マオマオ), a 17-year-old girl who was kidnapped and sold into the palace as a servant. But Maomao is no ordinary servant. She grew up in the pleasure district (花街 / hanamachi), raised by a pharmacist, and she has an extraordinary knowledge of medicine, herbs, and — most importantly — poison.
彼女たちの中にいるのが猫猫（マオマオ）。人さらいに連れ去られ、下女として後宮に売られてきた17歳の少女です。しかし猫猫はただの下女ではありません。花街（はなまち）で薬師に育てられ、薬草や薬、そして何より重要な——毒——について並外れた知識を持っています。
Maomao tries to keep her head down. She wants to survive her time in the palace quietly and go home. But when she notices that the emperor’s infant children are mysteriously dying one after another, she can’t stay silent. She realizes the cause — and she leaves an anonymous note to save the life of one of the consorts.
猫猫は目立たないようにしています。宮殿で静かに日々を過ごし、無事に帰りたいだけ。しかし、皇帝の幼い子どもたちが次々と謎の死を遂げていることに気づいた時、彼女は沈黙していられなくなります。その原因に気づき、妃のひとりの命を救うため匿名の手紙を残します。
This act catches the attention of Jinshi (壬氏 / ジンシ), a breathtakingly beautiful court official whose smile can melt anyone — except Maomao.
